Day 12 - The Vegetarian Diet
I almost fell off the wagon today.
Last night, Levar gave me nutritional information on how to successfully burn fat by eating more – by picking the right foods and eating them in the right amounts. He asked me whether or not I was a vegetarian and I briefly explained to him that I am, if only for this month. He nodded that he understood and continued on with the information that would benefit me long term rather than just over the next two weeks (i.e. he told me what I need to know about eating meat).
It is advised that for lunch you have a Starchy Carb, Protein, and Vegetables/Salad. I had to go to the bank to deposit a cheque and I said, “I’ll go to Wendy’s on the way back and grab a salad and a baked potato.” That would cover all my based – the potato is the starch, the chicken is the protein, and the lettuce, onions and tomato are all vegetables! Score! This is a meal that I often used to get prior to starting this vegetarian diet and it just goes to show you how much I simply do not care about eating meat. Chicken barely registers as a meat to me! When I got to the counter to order, though, I realized my folly and instead ordered a baked potato avec sour cream and a side garden salad instead, sans dressing. It was under five dollars and did more than enough of the job of filling me up.
I am going to go grocery shopping tonight. I have ninety-five dollars that I am hoping to be enough to last me the next two weeks for food. Even though I can get away with an occasional meal at Wendy’s like I did today, it is healthier and more cost-effective to make my own foods instead. I even have the Tupperware at home to do this! Hoorah!
I have to pick up more fish tonight. As much as I want to, I won’t be picking up any more perogies as they are a little on the heavy side in the “useless carbs” department. Let’s see...

Day 10 - The Vegetarian Diet
This is actually an entry I wrote yesterday but forgot to post. Whoops!
I caved.
On Friday I had a burger. It was a cheap, no-name burger. It was delicious.
My father picked me up at 11:00 on Saturday morning. Because I don’t have a cell phone, I was waiting for him outside and was able to soak up a little sun. We went to Queensway Fish & Chips and had – you guessed it – fish and chips. It was surprisingly good and I only finished half my fries. It wasn’t out of want for a healthful meal, rather, they weren’t quite good enough to finish. The fish certainly was, though! After that we went to see Horrible Bosses, which was absolutely hilarious. I got my new computer from Best Buy for only $699.99. When I got home and set everything up I purchased a year’s subscription to avast!, which is apparently one of the better (affordable) programs. Then my mother decided that she wanted to go to a movie so we went out and saw Bad Teacher.
I’ve been playing Rift since Saturday night/Sunday morning and it’s quickly turning out to be a completely enjoyable game. It takes a little bit of each game (the good) and brings it all together while fixing all the pitfalls of other MMO’s, such as WoW and Aion. I’ve made one of each of the four classes and, to my surprise, my current favourite is the Rogue class, using the Marksman/Ranger/Bard set up. Things die so quickly! Woo!
On a more serious note, the Infectious Disease Clinic finally let me know that they had received my results. Did they call me? No, I had called them, and the dumbass receptionist was like, “Oh yeah, we got your results about two weeks ago.” Thanks, dumbshit. She wouldn’t tell me the results over the phone and said that the doctor would be calling me to set up an appointment. I’m assuming this means that my stool samples came back positive for something. For those of you not in the know, the story is as follows:
My cat had a tapeworm. It wasn’t just all-of-a-sudden, either. When we first got her in October of 2009 I had noticed a peculiar looking white thing hanging from the fur near her butt. Never having seen such a thing, I thought that she probably just sat in something. A few more months go by and I see it again. I didn’t connect the dots and once again dismissed it as “no big deal.” Finally, about a month and a half ago, I saw it again and said, “THAT’S IT. I’M GOOGLING THIS SHIT!” So I Googled it and all signs pointed to a tapeworm. The next day the veterinarian confirmed my suspicions and applied a treatment of Profender to the nape of Samantha’s neck. When I explained how long I thought she had had it for, he told me that I should get tested just in case. Suddenly things started falling into place – I’ve been feeling slightly under the weather with no real reason for a long while. I started paying attention to (excuse me for being graphic) my bowel movements. Were they irregular? Were they particularly smelly? Were there any white spots in them? The answer, upsettingly, to all of the above was “Yes.” After work one day I went to the Trillium Health Centre in Toronto and spent four hours getting processed and providing them with samples. This was on June 4th. The doctor, as a precaution, gave me a prescription for 100mg albendazole, a common parasite-killer. An appointment was scheduled with the Infectious Disease Clinic as a follow up. I haven’t heard anything since then.
Until now! And now I have to wait even longer for the damned doctor to call me back (who knows how long that will be) to set up and appointment. Their office hours are Monday-Friday, 9-3, so I am going to have to take an afternoon off of work to go and see them. It’s exasperating, especially since the results are hindering my ability to qualify for my group benefits plan here at work. That’s another story entirely, one that really pisses me off because of yet another company that is completely inept.
Despite all of this, I’m in high spirits. Today is a beautiful day and I don’t really have all that much to complain about.
I left my gym clothes and shoes at home so I won’t be able to go today (I went yesterday) but I promise both you, my readers, and myself that I will be going for a swim tonight to compensate. I see Levar tomorrow for another hour of torture. Whoops, sorry – personal training.
UPDATE: I got the results today and I do not have a parasite!

Day 05 - The Vegetarian Diet
I cannot believe I've made it through an entire work week without eating meat. Even though I believe that fish should be considered meat, most vegetarians don't and so I am using this loophole to get an extra boost of protein whenever I can. But... I'm all out of fish! :(
Last night I made a delicious fish sandwich using a fresh kaiser bun from the grocery store, marble cheese, tomato, and spinach. It was really good and it almost passed for a burger. Almost.
Once I get through tonight's temptation (alcohol + meat = wild temptations for Kirsten to stray) I think I will be in the clear for this weekend. It's still difficult for me to avoid meat, but it's getting easier and easier with every meal that I choose to go meatless. For example, I went to Ikea today to pick up a gift card for Jennifer and James (I'm going to a house-warming party tonight) and in the cafeteria I was so tempted to get my usual meatball and mashed potato dish. Instead, though, I got the creamy vegetable pasta and a very, very green and leafy salad with an apple juice. Go me!

I'm terrible when it comes to updating on the weekend, but hopefully I remember so I can share with you all the escapades of one seriously packed weekend.

Day 04 - The Vegetarian Diet
Yesterday, for dinner, I ate the same thing I had on Tuesday night except that I added a fillet of Mediterranean style salmon. It was even more delicious than before! I used less sour cream than the first time, too, so it was slightly healthier. Once this container of sour cream finishes I will look for some dairy-free sour cream just to try it out.
Now that we’re approaching the weekend I have to start worrying about temptation. Yesterday after I visit with Levar for an hour I am going to a friend’s house to celebrate their new place. As none of them are vegetarian, I doubt that there will be anything animal-friendly to eat. Also, I am going out with my father on Saturday (he loves meat) and while he mostly supports me in my endeavours, he thinks vegetarianism is rather silly and will likely tempt me to eat meat. Still, I warned him ahead of time that this was coming so I think he will be more accepting of my month-long decision.
Speaking of Saturday: I’m getting a new computer! I can’t wait to be able to fully utilize the internet again. I must make it a point to ensure that I scan for viruses weekly to make sure that what happened to the old one doesn’t happen again. That virus/spyware was rather brutal and it has rendered my computer entirely useless, even after reformatting.
And I will make my father take me to Highland Farms. I have to stock up for food for the weekend or I will never make it through without gorging on delicious meat. I’m thinking I will pick up a spaghetti squash again and see if I can’t make a truly healthful lunch/dinner out of it. This is what I plan to buy:
- red and green peppers
- cucumber
- green olives
- baby carrots
- corn on the cob
- black beans (canned)
- tofu (small container)
- onion powder
- vegan "sausage" patties
- eggs
- multi-grain bread
- tomatoes
- almond milk
- macadamia nut oil
- Mieuslix (Kellogg's brand)

Day 03 - The Vegetarian Diet
Last night I made and ate the most fabulous rice-based dish I have ever had and it only took ten minutes!
1 cup of brown rice
1/2 red pepper
1/2 cup frozen corn
1/2 small onion, sliced
1/2 cup spinach
2 tablespoons of 5% sour cream
black pepper, to taste
I put the rice on first and, while that was cooking, I sauteed the other ingredients (sour cream and black pepper aside) in a pan. When the rice was done I simply threw it into the pan, mixed it all up, stirred in some sour cream and pepper and VOILA! Dinner in a snap!
